Fitsula

Fistula

An anal fistula is an abnormal tunnel or passage that forms between the inside of the anal canal and the skin around the anus. It usually develops as a result of an infection in the anal glands, which leads to the formation of an abscess. When the abscess does not heal completely, it can create a small channel that causes recurring discharge, pain, and discomfort.

Fistulas do not heal on their own and often require proper medical treatment to prevent repeated infections and complications.

Types of Fistula

  1. Simple Fistula: A single, straightforward tract with minimal involvement of surrounding muscles.

  2. Complex Fistula: Involves multiple tracts or deeper tissues and may be more difficult to treat.

  3. Intersphincteric Fistula: The most common type, passing between the internal and external sphincter muscles.

  4. Transsphincteric Fistula: Passes through both sphincter muscles and may extend to the skin.

Causes

  • Untreated or recurring anal abscess

  • Infection in the anal region

  • Chronic conditions like Crohn’s disease
